Beginner Mountain Dulcimer

Aubrey will get you started playing a few simple songs instantly! Tuned to DAD, Aubrey will teach 2-3 chords, as well as "noting" with a stick or the finger. Repertoire will be traditional and singing-oriented.


Ballads on the Mountain Dulcimer

Starting in the DAD tuning, Aubrey will teach traditional ballads learned in Appalachia from Jean Ritchie and other sources. These haunting, ancient story songs can be simple to learn, yet offer increasingly complex and beautiful possibilities as the player develops his or her playing style.


Improvising on the Mountain Dulcimer

We improvise every day in speech and actions so here's a chance for us to access what we already know about music! Using simple melody lines, chord progressions, and lots of repetition, the class will enjoy the "zone" of letting go and experimenting with chords, melody, and harmony.

Learn the basics in playing the hammered dulcimer. Get familiar with how the notes are arranged, how to use your hammers, and how to play a simple tune.

Join Elwood in this popular festival workshop and learn to play the bones, spoons, limberjack, and other surprises! Bring your own percussion instruments if you have them, including the Bodhran. <p>All levels; appropriate for older children as well</p>


Beginner Mandolin

From 9 to 10 in Far corner room with Dick for Beg.

This workshop will cover mandolin basics, from playing chords in a jam to playing some basic melodies.


Mandolin II

This workshop will get into some more some more advanced chording techniques, playing fiddle tunes, and improvising some melodies.


Bluegrass & Old-Time Rhythm on any instrument

From 11:30 to 12:30 in Far corner room with Dick for Beg. - Int.

During jams and when playing with any ensemble, instruments must support the rhythm of the group. This workshop will show how string instruments (such as dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, guitar, and bass) each have a unique role in adding to an ensemble.


Flatpicking Guitar

From 3 to 4 in Far corner room with Dick for Int.

This workshop will cover how flatpicked guitar forms a rhythm base for bluegrass and old-time music and even shines as a melody instrument.


Dance

Clogging

From 3 to 4 in Lake corner room with Aubrey for All

Aubrey is also know around the US as a highly percussive, exciting clogger. Here's a chance to first watch her demonstrate her clogging style via her ten minute "Talking Clogging" routine and then learn some of the steps yourself! Smooth-soled shoes and light clothing recommended for this workshop. What a nice break from sitting!

Students will learn how to play notes, chords, and tunes on the 'D' harmonica. We will also explore positions on the harmonica. 'D' harmonicas will be available for $10. or students may bring their own.

Kid's Folkcraft class

Come build your own limberjack dancing instrument made from a potato! A $5 material fee is due preferably ahead of time with registration. Please register ahead of time. Ages 5 and older welcome. Parents must help in the class for participants under 8 years old.
